the water. Dave was helping each person off the

boat. They entered using what was called the "big

step method," which was an apt name. They each

took a big step off the side of the boat with their fins

on, holding their masks and regulators in place.

"I've put more weight on your belt," Dave said.

"But the BC will keep you buoyant." He squeezed

air into her vest. "I want to make sure you don't

step in and sink straight to the bottom."

"You always have to look after me," she said.

"Ain't that the truth? I don't know what you do

in L.A."

Jean put her regulator in her mouth and stepped

off the boat. She sank briefly, but then hobbled to

the surface, laughing. Mandy and Michele were

already in the water.

"I want to live here!" Jean cried.

"Let's not go home," Michele agreed.

Johnny carefully let the proper amount of air out

of their BCs. Their descent was totally different

from the previous day. They had to slowly go down

the length of the anchor rope. Jean far preferred the

method to struggling through the waves. That day,

however, she had trouble clearing her ears. Several

times she had to go back up a few feet and blow

lightly with her nostrils pinched. It was an inconvenience,

nothing more. Five minutes after stepping

off the boat, she was on the bottom with her

friends and several other passengers.

Johnny had been right. The previous day had

hardly prepared her for the stunning beauty of the

coral and the breathtaking clarity of the water. Jean
